Beijing CDC Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene issued ‘tips on dietary safety for the elderly during the epidemic’, the elderly should consume at least 12 kinds of food every day, increase the intake of fish, poultry, meat, eggs, milk, soybeans, fruits and vegetables and other types of food; and take the initiative to drink a sufficient amount of water, a small amount of multiple meals, the food should be fine and soft, to prevent choking and coughing.

Guizhou Medical University Hospital Clinical Nutrition Department Director Yang Dagang accepted a reporter interview, reminding the elderly diet to pay attention to these issues:

The elderly body function degradation, immune function decline, and often accompanied by a variety of chronic diseases. Therefore, the elderly are susceptible to infectious diseases and high-risk susceptible groups, do a good job of diet (nutrition) management of the elderly, can improve the immunity of the elderly.

 

1. Ensure a balanced diet (no picky eating/no favouritism) with daily food combinations in the following proportions:

a. Staple food (rice, coarse grains) 1/10
b. Soya bean products and dairy products 2/10 
c. Poultry, eggs, meat (chicken, duck, fish) 2/10 
d. Vegetables and fruits (vegetables, fruits) 5/10

2. Pay attention to food safety and hygiene:

Separate raw and cooked food

Food should be boiled/cooked

Do not eat raw, cold or hard food

 

3. Adequate drinking water

Small amount of times, warm boiled water or light tea, it is recommended to drink 1500-1800ml of water per day. Recently, you can increase the amount of high-quality protein-rich food (egg/milk/fish/beef/soybean products, etc.), which can help to enhance the body's resistance, and slow down the muscle decay.

Vitamin D is found in foods such as marine fish, liver, egg yolks, etc., but in limited quantities and is mainly synthesised by the body itself under sunlight exposure.
